Access to this prominent mountain at the edge of the Velika Kapela massif is typically via roads leading from the town of Ogulin. The most popular starting point is a designated trailhead located at the mountain's forested base.
Best season
Late spring to early autumn features the safest and most enjoyable conditions for reaching the summit of the sleeping giant. Winter ascents are typically discouraged for average hikers due to dangerous ice and snow on the steep upper sections.
Terrain & paths
The ascent starts on a steep, zigzagging forest trail before transitioning into a rugged, rocky scramble near the summit. The final section requires navigating steep rock steps, often aided by installed steel cables for stability.
What to bring
Proper mountain hiking boots with excellent traction are mandatory for the steep and rocky final approach. Hikers should pack layered clothing, as the exposed peak can be significantly colder and windier than the forested base.
Parking
A designated parking area is generally available at the main trailhead where the forest path begins. As this is a highly celebrated mountain in Croatian hiking culture, the lot frequently fills up rapidly on pleasant weekends.
Safety
