Kira is a major municipality in the Wakiso District, situated north and east of Uganda's capital, Kampala, and recognized as the second most populous urban center in the country. Originally a small trading center, Kira was formally incorporated into a municipality in 2003 and later elevated to a city-status municipality in 2016 to better manage its explosive growth. The town's geography is characterized by its proximity to the northern shores of Lake Victoria and its inclusion of several significant hills that have become prime residential areas for the middle and upper classes. Economically, Kira is home to the Kampala Industrial and Business Park in Namanve, a massive project designed to centralize manufacturing and logistics for the entire nation. Culturally, the municipality is famous for housing the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, a site of global religious importance that attracts millions of Christian pilgrims every year on June 3rd.
