Entebbe is situated on a peninsula on the northern shores of Lake Victoria and served as the British administrative center and capital of Uganda from 1893 to 1958. The city gained international prominence due to its airport, which was the site of the 1976 Operation Entebbe, a high-profile hostage rescue mission. Geographically, the city sits at an elevation of 1,180 meters above sea level and experiences a tropical climate influenced by the vast lake. Entebbe is home to the country's oldest botanical gardens, established in 1898, which house a significant collection of indigenous African plant species. Spanning an area of approximately 56 square kilometers, the city remains a critical logistical hub for international aviation and maritime transport. Today, it also hosts the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and various government ministries, maintaining its status as a key political and environmental center.
