Uganda National Mosque (Uganda)

Weather…

The Uganda National Mosque, often referred to as the Gaddafi National Mosque, towers over Old Kampala Hill and is the largest Islamic place of worship in the country. Construction originally began under Idi Amin but remained a ruin for decades until it was completed in 2006 following a generous donation from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The mosque can accommodate over 15,000 worshippers and serves as the headquarters of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. Particularly distinctive is its minaret, which rises over 50 meters high and gives visitors a spectacular 360-degree view of all Kampala after climbing 304 steps. The architecture combines African, Arabic, and European stylistic elements and is characterized by magnificent interior decorations, artistic carpets, and monumental chandeliers. As a symbol of religious diversity and international engagement, the mosque is an indispensable part of Kampala's skyline and a center for education and social cohesion.
