Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine (Uganda)

Weather…

The Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine is a significant religious and historical site located on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kampala. This sacred ground marks the exact location where King Mwanga II, in May 1886, pronounced the first death sentences against the young Christian converts in his court, sparking a period of intense religious persecution. It was here that St. Andrew Kaggwa and St. Denis Sebugwawo were executed for their unwavering faith. The contemporary basilica built on the site is an architectural marvel that attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year. The shrine gained worldwide prominence during the 2015 visit of Pope Francis, who consecrated the altar and paid tribute to the martyrs' legacy. Today, the serene complex serves as a peaceful place for reflection, commemorating the origins of Christianity in Uganda and the ultimate sacrifice made by the early believers.
