Kasubi Tombs
The Kasubi Tombs in Kampala are a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual heart of the Buganda Kingdom. Located on Kasubi Hill, they house the burial grounds of four Kabakas (kings) of Buganda, including Mutesa I and Mwanga II. The main building, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, is an architectural masterpiece made from organic materials such as reeds, wood, and thatch, and is considered one of the largest thatched buildings in the world. The site symbolizes the spiritual and political identity of the Baganda people and is used for important royal ceremonies. In 2010, a fire severely damaged the facility, sparking a global wave of solidarity and a meticulous reconstruction process that lasted for years. Despite the destruction, the spiritual power of the site remained unbroken, and traditional artisans used ancestral techniques to preserve the heritage. Today, the tombs are a symbol of the resilience of Ugandan culture and a major destination for both tourists and pilgrims.
