Namugongo Martyrs Shrine (Uganda)

Weather…

The Namugongo Martyrs Shrine is one of Africa's most significant religious sites, commemorating the execution of 45 Christian martyrs in 1886. On the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, both Catholic and Anglican converts were executed for refusing to renounce their faith. The impressive basilica, consecrated in 1975, was designed by Swiss architect Justus Dahinden and its shape resembles a traditional African round hut (manyatta). The structure is supported by 22 steel pillars, symbolizing the 22 Catholic martyrs who were executed. Every year on June 3rd, Uganda Martyrs Day, millions of believers from around the world pilgrimage to Namugongo to honor the victims. The site also features an artificial lake used for baptisms and ritual washings. The shrine is not only a symbol of faith but also a monument to religious freedom and the complex history of the encounter between African traditions and missionary influences.
