Rubaga is a historic and culturally significant division of Kampala, situated on one of the original seven hills that define the geography of Uganda's capital. Historically, Rubaga Hill served as the seat of the palace of Kabaka Mutesa I, the 30th King of Buganda, before he gifted the land to Catholic missionaries in the late 19th century. This gesture led to the construction of the Saint Mary's Cathedral Rubaga, a large Romanesque structure completed in 1925 that remains a primary landmark and the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala. Geographically, the division is located in the western part of the city and is characterized by its steep slopes and well-established institutional presence, including several of the country's oldest hospitals and schools. Beyond its religious and historical importance, Rubaga is a densely populated urban center with a thriving economy based on trade, education, and health services. Modern Rubaga continues to be a symbol of Uganda's deep-rooted religious heritage and monarchical traditions.
