Razzakov, known until 2022 as Isfana, lies at the far western tip of the Batken Region at around 1100 metres above sea level and has about 28,000 inhabitants. The town is surrounded on three sides by Tajik territory and can be reached from the Kyrgyz capital only via long detours or by aircraft. As early as the 9th century, an important caravan stop on the route between Khujand and Kashgar was located here, and the present-day town grew out of several villages that, in the 19th century, were part of the Kokand Khanate. In 2022 Isfana was renamed in honour of the Kyrgyz politician and writer Ishak Razzakov, one of the first Kyrgyz Communist Party chiefs, persecuted by Stalin and executed in 1938. The local economy rests on dried fruit, tobacco cultivation, sheep breeding and small workshops, while many residents work seasonally as labour migrants in Russia.
