Vakhsh Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Vakhsh Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant is located in the city of Levakant (formerly Sarband) on the banks of the Vakhsh River and is the only facility of its kind in Tajikistan. Built in the 1960s, the plant specializes in the production of urea (carbamide) and ammonia, which are of strategic importance to Tajik agriculture, particularly cotton farming. For a long period, operations suffered due to irregular supplies of natural gas, which is an essential raw material for nitrogen synthesis. Following an extended period of inactivity, the plant underwent comprehensive modernization with the help of foreign investment, primarily from China, and was recommissioned in 2023. The facility utilizes the hydroelectric power of the Vakhsh River to meet its high energy demands and contributes to reducing the country's reliance on expensive fertilizer imports. As a central industrial object in the Khatlon Province, it secures hundreds of jobs and supports the national food security strategy by enhancing soil productivity.
