Levakant, formerly known as Sarband, lies on the Vakhsh River not far from Bokhtar in Khatlon Province. The town of about 25,000 hosts one of the country’s most important industrial complexes, dominated by the massive “Azot” nitrogen fertiliser plant, once the largest fertiliser producer of the Tajik SSR. The factory supplied nitrogen fertiliser to the cotton fields of Central Asia and employed thousands of workers in Soviet times. It is now being partially modernised and brought back online to regain market share regionally. The town itself originated as a workers’ settlement with characteristic prefabricated housing, broad avenues, and a large palace of culture. Just outside the city stands the Vakhsh hydropower plant, which supplies energy to local industry. The region is also agriculturally significant, with extensive cotton, pomegranate, and watermelon fields complementing the industrial economy.
