Vakhsh Valley Cotton Fields (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Vakhsh Valley in southern Tajikistan is one of the country's most vital agricultural regions, primarily known for its extensive cotton fields. Cotton, often referred to as 'white gold,' has been a cornerstone of the Tajik economy for decades. Intensive agricultural development of the valley began in the 1930s with the construction of large-scale irrigation systems that harness the waters of the Vakhsh River. The region's hot and dry climate provides good conditions for growing long-staple cotton, which is highly valued on the global market for its superior quality. The harvest season in late summer and autumn significantly shapes the social and economic life of local communities. In addition to cotton, the fertile alluvial soils of the valley support the cultivation of grains and vegetables, though cotton production remains the dominant sector. In recent years, efforts have been made to modernize farming techniques and reduce reliance on monocultures to ensure long-term soil fertility and environmental sustainability.
