The Ayni Opera and Ballet Theatre in Dushanbe is Tajikistan's premier performing arts venue. It is named after Tajik writer Sadriddin Ayni (1878-1954). The building was constructed in 1939 in neoclassical style with national decorations. The facade features a portico with six Corinthian columns. The auditorium seats over 1,000 and has excellent acoustics. Operas, ballets, and plays are performed, often with Tajik themes. The theatre was a center of Soviet cultural patronage. After independence, it experienced a renaissance with new productions. The repertoire includes works by composers like S. A. Balasanyan. The building is a protected monument.
