Known until 2018 by its Soviet-era name Qurghonteppa, Bokhtar is the capital of Khatlon Province and the economic engine of the southern lowlands along the Vakhsh River. Home to about 110,000 people, the city anchors one of the country’s most productive farming regions, where cotton, rice, pomegranates, and citrus dominate. Its layout follows generous Soviet planning with broad boulevards, leafy parks, and a central square now named after Ismoil Somoni. Nearby lie major archaeological sites, including the 7th-century Buddhist monastery complex of Ajina Teppe, where the famous 13-metre-long “Buddha in Nirvana” sculpture was unearthed. The city’s economic role is being reinforced by the upgrade of the Dushanbe, Bokhtar highway and by newly established industrial parks intended to attract foreign investment.
