Danghara lies in the northern part of Khatlon Province between Bokhtar and Kulob at an elevation of around 700 metres. The town of about 35,000 has undergone exceptional modernisation over the past two decades, being the birthplace of long-serving President Emomali Rahmon. A new university campus, a modern medical centre, a contemporary sports complex, and a free economic zone attracting mainly Chinese investors in mining, gold processing, and textiles have all been built. The surrounding region is agriculturally diverse, producing cotton, tobacco, grain, and wine. The irrigation system fed from the Nurek reservoir has also been expanded to bring the fertile loess steppes around Danghara into permanent cultivation. As a result, Danghara is now one of Tajikistan’s fastest-growing small towns and a showcase project of the central government.
