Nurek Dam (Tajikistan)

Weather…

The Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River is one of the highest man-made dams in the world, standing at a height of 300 meters. Construction began in 1961 during the Soviet era and was officially completed in 1980, with the associated hydroelectric power plant possessing a capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The dam creates the Nurek Reservoir, which covers an area of approximately 98 square kilometers and functions as the country's most vital energy storage facility. The structure is an earth-fill embankment dam with a clay core, providing it with exceptional stability in the seismically active region. The power plant supplies more than 70 percent of Tajikistan's total electricity demand and also enables large-scale irrigation of the surrounding agricultural lands. This engineering masterpiece serves as a symbol of Central Asia's industrial development and remains a central pillar of the national infrastructure.
