Bottmingen Castle (Switzerland)

Weather…

Bottmingen Castle is one of Switzerland's few remaining water castles, located in the Basel metropolitan area. Built in the 13th century as a residence for the noble Kämmerer family, it is characterized by its square layout and prominent corner towers. In the 18th century, under the ownership of Johannes Deucher, the medieval fortress was transformed into a French-style Baroque country estate, losing much of its original defensive character. The moat, fed by the Weidligbach stream, continues to provide the complex with its easy on the eye appearance. Since 1957, the castle has been a cantonally protected historical monument and currently functions as an upscale restaurant and event venue. Bottmingen stands as an outstanding example of the transformation of a defensive structure into a representative pleasure palace of the Enlightenment era.
