💡 Tips

  • Cross the Old Rhine Bridge to Rheinfelden (Switzerland); the contrast between the industrial German side and the medieval Swiss old town is striking.
  • Visit the "Inseli" island in the middle of the Rhine for a unique view of the rushing water and both border towns.
  • Dine and shop on the German side of the border if you want to save money, as prices are significantly lower than in Switzerland.
  • The weekly market at Albrechtsplatz is the best place to find seasonal produce from the Markgräflerland region.
  • Follow the Rhine river path for an easy walk or bike ride; the trail is flat and features constant views of the water.

Rheinfelden (Baden) is located in the southwestern corner of Germany, right on the High Rhine, which separates it from Switzerland. Unlike its Swiss counterpart, which has medieval origins, the German Rheinfelden was founded much later, in the late 19th century. Its growth was triggered by the construction of the Rheinfelden hydroelectric plant, the first of its kind in Europe. The availability of electricity led to the establishment of the aluminum industry, making the town a significant industrial hub. A major historical site within its boundaries is the Beuggen Castle, a former administrative seat of the Teutonic Order with over 800 years of history. Today, Rheinfelden is a flourishing city with deep cross-border ties to Switzerland and France. It features a high quality of life with its Rhine Park and its location at the foothills of the Southern Black Forest. The city serves as a vital bridge between nations, characterized by a multicultural community and a stable economy driven by manufacturing and services.
