💡 Tips
- Purchase a combined ticket for both Ľubovňa Castle and the adjacent open-air museum (skanzen) to save money and time.
- The walk from the parking lot up to the castle involves a short but steep climb, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
- While Euros are the standard, the proximity to the Polish border means some markets might informally accept Złoty, though you shouldn't rely on it.
- Visit the skanzen on summer weekends to often catch live demonstrations of traditional crafts and folk music.
🍽 Food
Slovakia's national dish of potato dumplings and sheep cheese. Best enjoyed in a traditional wooden 'koliba' restaurant.
Hearty regional soups made with cabbage, mushrooms, or beans, typical of the local Goral culture.
Traditional sweet honey wine. You can often find a warming cup sold near the castle or in town cafes.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for traditional, locally made Goral hats adorned with shells and other folk items at the skanzen.
The nearby village of Hniezdne produces this renowned Slovak whisky. Bottles can be found in local liquor stores.
Take a peaceful stroll along the banks of the Poprad River as it flows through the town.
The open-air museum is wonderfully quiet on weekday mornings, offering an immersive historical experience.

Stará Ľubovňa is beautifully stretched out in the valley of the Poprad River in northern Slovakia, situated on the edge of the enchanting Pieniny region and the Levoča Mountains (Levočské vrchy). The city is a place where Polish, Slovak, German, and Ruthenian cultures intersected for centuries. The undisputed landmark, proudly perched on a limestone cliff above the city, is Stará Ľubovňa Castle (Ľubovniansky hrad), a magnificent fortress where the Polish Crown Jewels were once hidden. Directly beneath the castle lies an exceptional open-air museum (skanzen) that attracts visitors by showcasing the traditional Ruthenian and Spiš-German folk architecture of the region, including a valuable 19th-century wooden church. Today, Stará Ľubovňa is an important tourist hub from which visitors can explore rafting on the Dunajec River in the nearby Pieniny National Park or the healing thermal springs of Vyšné Ružbachy.
