Old Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Old Castle (Starý zámok) in Banská Štiavnica is a fascinating monument that showcases the transformation of a sacred site into a formidable fortress. Originally built in the 13th century as a Romanesque three-aisle basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the building was radically reconstructed in the 16th century due to the looming Ottoman threat. The church nave was dismantled, arcades were walled up, and the entire complex was reinforced with thick defensive walls and bastions. This resulted in a unique architectural blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements. In the inner courtyard, the outlines of the original church are still visible, while the massive tower served as both a belfry and a watchtower. Today, the Old Castle houses the most valuable collections of the Slovak Mining Museum, including archaeological finds and Baroque sculptures. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Banská Štiavnica, it stands as an essential example of medieval defensive architecture.
