Low Tatras National Park (Slovakia)

Weather…

Low Tatras National Park, designated in 1978, is the largest contiguous protected area in Slovakia with an expanse of 728 square kilometers. The geology of the park is heavily dominated by granite and limestone, which has led to the formation of extensive karst systems. Particularly noteworthy is the Demänová cave system, whose passages extend over a length of more than 40 kilometers. The harsh mountain climate promotes the growth of extensive spruce and pine forests, providing a habitat for numerous endangered animal species such as the brown bear, the wolf, and the Eurasian lynx. The protected area encompasses the 80-kilometer-long main ridge of the mountains, highly valued by hikers and naturalists for its alpine meadows. Among the most prominent elevations are Ďumbier (2043 meters) and Chopok (2024 meters), on whose slopes the Tatra chamois is frequently observed.
