💡 Tips
- The Grand Castle is partly a luxury hotel, but you can usually tour the historical ruins. Check with the reception for the current public tour times.
- Don't miss the town's impressive Arboretum; it's one of the highest in Central Europe and reflects a long local forestry tradition.
- This town makes an excellent, quiet base camp for hiking in the High and Low Tatras, far less crowded than nearby Liptovský Mikuláš.
- Because it sits in a mountain basin, evenings can be remarkably chilly even in mid-summer, so always pack warm layers.
🍽 Food
Visit a traditional wooden 'Koliba' restaurant near the town to taste potato dumplings with authentic Liptov sheep cheese.
Look for grilled trout (pstruh) on the menus of local inns, sourced freshly from the cold waters of the nearby Belá river.
Sample smoked Oštiepok or Parenica cheese from small dairy shops (salaš) on the outskirts of town.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy these popular salty, braided cheese strings directly from local grocery stores for an excellent hiking snack.
Thanks to its proximity to major national parks, local sports shops are great places to pick up practical mountain equipment.
Take a peaceful stroll among hundreds of rare tree species in this historical park next to the forestry school.
Walk along the pristine, wild mountain river to enjoy the sound of rushing water and views of the surrounding peaks.

Liptovský Hrádok, picturesquely situated at the confluence of the Váh and Belá rivers at the foot of the majestic Low Tatras, is a small but historically and touristically highly significant town in the Liptov region. The core of the town is the romantic Hrádok water castle, built in the 14th century to control important trade routes, whose ruins and the attached beautiful Renaissance manor house function today as a luxury boutique hotel and museum. Thanks to its strategic location, Liptovský Hrádok is considered a handy base camp for nature lovers and extreme sports enthusiasts, who embark from here on white-water rafting adventures on the wild Belá river or hikes into the untouched valleys of the High, Western, and Low Tatras. A special heritage site is the nationally renowned forestry arboretum.
