Veľký Krtíš is located in the south of Central Slovakia, idyllically located in the Ipeľ basin and the gentle Krupinská plateau, near the Hungarian border. The city experienced a rapid transformation in the 20th century, evolving from a modest agricultural village into a significant mining center driven by brown coal extraction, which permanently altered the demographic structure and the cityscape. Today, following the decline of mining, Veľký Krtíš distinguishes itself as a peaceful regional hub strongly influenced by the surrounding winemaking tradition, the region belongs to the Central Slovak wine district, famous for excellent white wines.
