Liptovský Hrádok Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Liptov Castle, often referred to as Sielnický hrad, holds the distinction of being the highest castle ruin in Slovakia, located at an elevation of 993 meters in the Choč Mountains. Built in the mid-13th century following the orders of King Béla IV, it functioned as the primary administrative center for the Liptov County. The fortress was strategically vital during the power struggles involving Matthew Csák and later during the Hussite campaigns in the 15th century. In 1471, King Matthias Corvinus ordered the total demolition of the castle to suppress a local rebellion, leading to its permanent abandonment. Archaeological excavations carried out between 1975 and 1980 uncovered the castle's layout, which is now preserved as an open-air archaeological site. Accessible via hiking trails from Kalameny, the ruins offer a unique historical experience combined with some of the most impressive panoramic views of the Liptov region and the Low Tatras.
