Lake
Liptovská Mara is the second largest reservoir in Slovakia by water volume and a premier recreational hub in the pretty Liptov region. This massive hydraulic engineering project was constructed on the Váh river between 1969 and 1975 to protect the surrounding area from devastating floods and to generate hydroelectric power. The flooding of the valley necessitated the relocation of several historic villages; today, only the tower of the early Gothic church of Liptovská Mara stands on the shore as a poignant memorial to the submerged namesake village. Framed by the spectacular peaks of the Low and High Tatras as well as the Choč Mountains, the lake provides a sweeping backdrop for a wide array of water sports. Visitors enjoy exceptional conditions for sailing, windsurfing, fishing, and extensive boat cruises. During the summer, the shores teem with tourists drawn to the numerous campsites, beaches, and modern leisure parks lining the water.
