Dobšiná Ice Cave (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Dobšiná Ice Cave (Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa) is a world-class natural wonder. Discovered in 1870, it was opened to the public just a year later. In 1887, it earned the distinction of being the first cave in Europe to be electrically lit. Located in the southern part of the Slovak Paradise, the cave is unique for its massive volume of ice, over 110,000 cubic meters, which remains frozen year-round thanks to the cave's 'refrigerating' bag-like shape that traps cold air. Visitors descend into a subterranean frozen world where temperatures hover around freezing even during the peak of summer. The tour leads through dramatic halls like the 'Great Hall', where the ice can reach a thickness of up to 26 meters. Shimmering ice falls, columns, and massive floor ice are visible throughout the route. Historically, the cave was even used as a year-round skating rink for the local public. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000. A visit requires warm clothing and sturdy footwear due to the significant temperature drop inside.
