Dobšiná Ice Cave (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Dobšiná Ice Cave (Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa) is one of Slovakia's most remarkable natural phenomena and ranks among the largest ice caves in Europe. Hidden within the limestone massifs of the Slovak Paradise National Park, this cave retains massive volumes of ice year-round because its sack-like profile traps freezing air during the winter and prevents it from escaping during the summer months. It was discovered in 1870 by mining engineer Eugen Ruffínyi and remarkably became the first cave in Europe to be electrically illuminated in 1887. Descending into the frosty underworld, visitors traverse gigantic halls dominated by floor ice up to 26 meters thick, colossal ice columns, and frozen waterfalls. The dazzling, crystalline ice formations create a stark and beautiful contrast with the surrounding bare rock. Recognizing its immense scientific and aesthetic significance, this unique glacial system was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in the year 2000.
