Gombasek Monastery (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Pauline Monastery in Gombasek was founded around 1371 by members of the Bebek noble family in the heart of the Gemer region. This Gothic complex served as a significant spiritual and educational center for the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit for nearly two centuries. In the mid-16th century, during the rise of the Reformation and increasing Ottoman threats, the Bebeks secularized the property and converted the monastery into a defensive fortress. By 1555, the monks were forced to leave, and the site eventually fell into ruin as its stones were repurposed for local constructions. Modern archaeological research has successfully uncovered the foundations of the single-nave church and the adjacent monastic buildings, which are now preserved as a historical park. The ruins stand as a silent witness to the medieval religious life in the Slovak Karst area, located near the famous Gombasek Cave.
