Kežmarok, majestically situated at the foothills of the High Tatras, is one of the most impressive historical towns in the Spiš region. As a former free royal town, its history was significantly shaped by the Carpathian Germans (Spiš Saxons), who brought wealth to the city through trade and crafts. The historic center, rightfully an urban conservation area, resembles an open-air architectural museum. The absolute highlight is the dramatic wooden articular church (a UNESCO World Heritage site), built without a single iron nail, whose magnificent, sky-blue interior enchants visitors from around the world. Immediately adjacent stands the striking Neo-Byzantine New Evangelical Church, which houses the tomb of the Hungarian national hero Imre Thököly. The city skyline is also dominated by the formidable Kežmarok Castle (Kežmarský hrad), a late Gothic urban castle closely associated with the powerful Zápolya and Thököly families.
