The Kangari Hills Forest Reserve spans the Tonkolili and Kono districts in central Sierra Leone. Established as a protected area in 1924, it is one of the few remaining locations of dense Upper Guinean rainforest in the region. The range of hills is geologically notable for its mineral resources, particularly gold, which has historically led to conflicts between conservation efforts and mining interests. The reserve covers an area of approximately 8,573 hectares and acts as a vital watershed for several major rivers, including the Pampana and the Moa. The flora is characterized by majestic trees such as mahogany, while the fauna is home to rare species like the forest elephant, chimpanzees, and the rare Gola malimbe. Despite threats from illegal logging and encroachment for agriculture, the area remains a critical biodiversity hotspot. Walking trails through the reserve offer glimpses into undisturbed ecosystems and the complex hydrology of Sierra Leone's interior highlands.
