Glacis stretches across the northern tip of Mahé and is one of the most geologically striking districts in the Seychelles. The name derives from the French for "slab of rock" or "polished slope," and aptly describes the smooth granite masses that here drop straight into the sea. These granite formations, part of an ancient microcontinent, are among the oldest rocks in the world and date back to a time when the Seychelles were still attached to Madagascar and India. The coast is dotted with small hidden coves such as Anse du Nord, Carana Beach, and the access beaches to Anse Major. Glacis is a favored residential area among well-to-do locals and hosts boutique hotels such as the former Northolme, which famously inspired writer Ian Fleming. Thanks to its westward orientation, Glacis features spectacular sunsets that glow through the rounded granite boulders as if filtered by nature itself. The main road winds in tight curves along the cliffs, opening sweeping ocean panoramas at every turn.
