Mamelles Island Seabird Colony (Seychelles)

Weather…

Mamelles Island is an uninhabited granitic island located approximately 14 kilometers northeast of Mahé in the Indian Ocean. The island's name is derived from the French word for "breasts," referring to the characteristic silhouette formed by its two prominent hills. On the higher of the two peaks sits a lighthouse, constructed in 1911, which still serves as a crucial navigational aid for maritime traffic heading towards Victoria. The island is an important conservation area for seabirds, particularly the sooty tern, which nests here in large colonies. Due to its steep cliffs and challenging landing conditions, the island has remained largely undisturbed, providing a good habitat for reptiles such as skinks. In the waters surrounding Mamelles, divers find a rich marine flora and fauna, with whale shark sightings being common during the season. The vegetation on the island is quite sparse due to the thin soil layer and exposed location, consisting mainly of grasses and low-lying shrubs.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is during the dry season, typically from May to October, when sooty terns breed in huge numbers. The colony is then most active, with chicks growing rapidly.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are handy when birds are commuting to feed. The colony usually rests during midday heat, making those hours less productive.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a safe distance from nests and colonies to avoid disturbance. Do not feed the birds and always stay on marked paths, as the terrain can be uneven.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars is essential for watching birds from a safe distance. Sturdy footwear with grip, sun protection, and plenty of water are strongly recommended.
🧭
Getting there
The island is only reachable by boat from nearby islands like Mahé or Praslin. Local operators typically run guided trips and handle permits.
🦌
What to expect
The sheer number of birds can be overwhelming, but patience is needed for the quiet moments. Allow at least two hours on site to experience the full range of colony activity.
