💡 Tips

  • Visit the Cascade waterfall early in the morning when the light filters through the jungle and the heat is still manageable.
  • Take advantage of the airport proximity for a final walk before your flight, but allow plenty of time for check-in.
  • Local buses towards Victoria stop frequently on the main road; have small change in Rupees ready.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for hikes in the hills, as paths can be very slippery after tropical rain showers.
  • Check the tide times if you plan to explore the small rocky coves along the coastline.

Cascade is one of the hilliest districts on the eastern coast of Mahé, lying between Seychelles International Airport and the central mountain ridge of the island. It takes its name from the many waterfalls that pour down its granite cliffs after heavy rains, most famously the Cascade Waterfall behind the eponymous Catholic church built in 1885. The parish church of Cascade is regarded as one of the oldest surviving Creole churches in the islands, dominated by a striking stone bell tower. Economically, the district benefits from its proximity to the airport, with many hospitality and logistics workers living here with their families. The slopes are densely covered with mango, cinnamon, and breadfruit trees, while old plantation tracks now serve as popular hiking paths. Cascade also hosts several schools and the administrative office for the eastern districts. A particular natural attraction is the Pointe Larue Reserve, a small bird sanctuary preserving lowland coastal habitat.
