Water temperature…
Turtle Bay lies in the Au Cap district on the southeastern coast of Mahé and owes its name to the green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles that, in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, came ashore here in large numbers to nest. Heavy hunting in the twentieth century severely reduced their populations, but thanks to targeted conservation programs run by the Marine Conservation Society Seychelles, the numbers have slowly recovered since the 1990s. Today turtles occasionally use the fine sandy beach again to lay their eggs, under strict supervision. Turtle Bay is distinguished by very calm turquoise waters protected by an offshore coral reef. Behind the beach stretch filao casuarinas and a small picnic ground popular with families and school outings. Nearby are several small guesthouses as well as the traditional Creole restaurant Marie Antoinette, housed in a nineteenth-century plantation manor and serving classic tropical dishes from old family recipes.
