Ozren Mountain is a prominent mountain range in southeastern Serbia, situated adjacent to the famous spa town of Sokobanja and renowned for its therapeutic climate. Its highest peak is Leskovik, reaching an elevation of 1,174 meters, although the rocky outcrop of Oštra čuka is equally popular among hikers for its panoramic views. Geologically, the mountain is characterized by karst formations, featuring numerous caves and the spectacular Ripaljka waterfall, which was the first natural monument to be legally protected in Serbia in 1948. The air on Ozren is exceptionally clean and rich in ozone, leading to the establishment of specialized pulmonary hospitals on its slopes during the early 20th century. Historically, the mountain has been a site of spiritual importance, evidenced by the 14th-century Jermenčić Monastery located within its forests. Today, Ozren serves as a major center for eco-tourism and outdoor activities, offering well-maintained trails through dense beech and oak woodlands. The area is also rich in biodiversity, providing a habitat for various bird species and a plethora of medicinal herbs.

Getting there
The mountain is most easily reached via local roads departing directly from the popular spa town of Sokobanja. Scenic winding routes quickly lead visitors into the dense, refreshing forest environment.
Best season
Highly favored from late spring through the golden autumn months. The mountain provides a much-needed, cool, and highly oxygenated retreat during the typically sweltering summer weeks in the lowlands.
Terrain & paths
Expect a beautiful mix of thick, ancient deciduous forests, wide open green meadows, and several mildly rocky panoramic viewpoints. The trails are generally well-graded and mostly of moderate difficulty.
What to bring
Standard hiking footwear is perfectly suitable for most of the marked pathways. Due to the area's reputation as an "air spa," simply bringing comfortable activewear, water, and some snacks is enough.
Parking
Suitable parking spots can be found near the primary excursion sites, major viewpoints, and local hospital grounds on the mountain. Spaces are generally abundant except during major summer holidays.
Safety
The mountain is exceptionally safe, with clearly marked hiking and recreational paths. As always in forested areas, it is wise to be aware of local wildlife and check carefully for ticks after hiking.
Time needed
Many visitors opt to spend a leisurely half-day, around three to five hours, wandering the network of paths, resting in the expansive meadows, and taking in the panoramic views over the Sokobanja basin.
