Colonial Center of Ziguinchor
The colonial center of Ziguinchor, situated in the fertile Casamance region, is a fascinating example of European expansion and cultural exchange in southern Senegal. Founded by the Portuguese in 1645 as a trading post on the banks of the Casamance River, the city remained under Portuguese influence for over two centuries before being officially ceded to France in 1888. This dual colonial heritage is reflected in the townscape, particularly in the Escale district, where old trading houses and administrative buildings line the riverfront. The architecture is characterized by red tile roofs, wide verandas, and integration into the lush tropical surroundings. Ziguinchor served as the primary export port for the region's agricultural products, notably palm oil and rice. The city's history is also deeply intertwined with the resistance movements of the local Diola people, who consistently defended their cultural autonomy. Today, the historic center remains a bustling area that, despite the passage of time, retains its unique charm and significance as a bridge between Atlantic and West African cultures.
