Sundy is a historic roça on the northwestern side of Príncipe Island and one of the most scientifically significant sites in the entire Atlantic. On 29 May 1919, British astrophysicist Sir Arthur Eddington observed a total solar eclipse here and was able to measure for the first time the deflection of light at the Sun's edge, the decisive empirical proof for Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. A bronze plaque at the roça still commemorates this key event of modern physics. The plantation was founded in 1875 by Portuguese Conde do Vale Flor and grew into Príncipe's largest cocoa and coffee roça, with its own railway, chapel and hospital. Today, the magnificent neoclassical manor house is home to a luxury eco-resort run by the HBD group (Here Be Dragons), combining architecture, history of science and tropical nature. The nearby Praia Sundy and Praia das Burras beaches are among the most important hawksbill turtle nesting sites in the entire region.
