Sundy (North) refers to the northern plateau behind the famous Sundy roça on Príncipe Island and has been a place of scientific history ever since Eddington's solar eclipse expedition of 1919. Today, the HBD resort, together with the International Astronomical Union, operates a small modern observatory on the plateau, from which the favorable astronomical conditions, low light pollution, near-equatorial position, clear northwestern visibility, are used for education and observation. School classes from Santo António come here regularly for astrophysics and natural sciences workshops, complemented by a mentoring program from Portugal's Coimbra University. Wide, almost endless paths through old coconut plantations connect the north to Praia Boi and Praia Sundy beaches, passing abandoned roça drying facilities and small springs with crystal-clear drinking water. Sundy (North) is thus a place where education, conservation and history come together.
