São Joaquim (Forest Edge) refers to the transition zone between the roça village São Joaquim and the Obô rainforest of Príncipe's interior. Right here, where cultivated and wild nature meet, stand some of the island's oldest cocoa trees, whose genetic material is being documented by research teams from Lisbon and São Paulo as a possible origin of the São Toméan Amelonado line. The region is also a key research area for ethnobotany: a local team systematically maps knowledge of edible fungi, medicinal plants and preservation techniques cultivated by residents for generations. Traditional forest beekeeping guilds are also active, keeping bee colonies in hollow tree trunks and producing dark Obô honey. Trails lead to ancient bois-de-fer giant trees, small waterfalls and hidden bat caves, an authentic immersion into Príncipe's primeval nature.
