Roça Infante D. Henrique (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Infante D. Henrique, named after Henry the Navigator, is located in the remote south of São Tomé and was once one of the most isolated plantations on the island. Its foundation in the early 20th century coincided with the late phase of the cocoa boom. Due to its secluded location, logistics were a constant challenge, necessitating the construction of a small port and an elaborate transport system. The Roça specialized in the production of cocoa and copra. The workforce consisted mainly of contract laborers, whose lives were marked by isolation and the strict rules of the plantation administration. After independence, production became unprofitable, and the Roça was abandoned. Today, nature has reclaimed most of the buildings, creating a haunting atmosphere. The ruins, including the dilapidated hospital and warehouses, have become a destination for adventurers, silently telling of the ambitions and ultimate failure of this remote colonial enterprise.
