Historical site
Roça Ribeira Izé, located near the larger and more famous Roça Água Izé, played an important, though often overlooked, role in São Tomé's cocoa network. Founded as a smaller satellite plantation, its main function was to support the production of the larger neighboring estates. It had a simpler infrastructure, consisting of basic workers' housing and drying facilities. Its history is closely intertwined with that of Água Izé, as they often shared workers and resources. The lives of the workers at Ribeira Izé were likely even harder than in the larger Roças, with fewer amenities and greater social control. After independence, the plantation quickly fell into decay as it was no longer economically viable. Today, the few remaining ruins are almost completely swallowed by vegetation. They serve as a silent reminder of the complex system of main and satellite plantations that underpinned the colonial cocoa economy and of the many nameless workers who kept that system running.

Visiting
The ruins of Ribeira Izé are open air and can be visited freely without any fee. You can wander through the remnants of the first church and explore the overgrown stone foundations of the old plantation.

There are no fixed opening hours, so visiting is generally possible during daylight. It is best to arrive in the morning to avoid the intense midday heat and enjoy softer light.

Photography is allowed everywhere on the site; the interplay of ruins and jungle creates dramatic images. A wide-angle lens is recommended to capture the full extent of the first church's remains.

Exploring the ruins thoroughly takes about one to one and a half hours. Add another 30 minutes if you wish to take many photos or simply sit and absorb the history.

Getting there
The site is a short drive from Santo António along a dirt track. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable, particularly after rain when the road becomes muddy.

Pack insect repellent and wear long trousers; the vegetation can be dense and mosquitoes are common. Starting at dawn gives you the most pleasant conditions and beautiful low-angle light.
