Abade (North) lies on the northeastern tip of Príncipe Island and is the seaward extension of the main Abade settlement. Here currents from the Bafia Sea and the equatorial countercurrent meet, making the area one of the region's best points for observing ocean currents, scientific buoys of Portugal's IPMA and Germany's GEOMAR have been collecting data on temperature, salinity and CO2 fixation here for years. Residents are among the island's most experienced deep-sea fishermen and maintain the building of especially sturdy, clinkered pirogues capable of night-time voyages into the open Atlantic. The small coastal surveillance station is operated by the national navy in cooperation with the EU's NESTOR mission to combat illegal fishing. From the high viewpoint, the sight reaches on clear days as far as São Tomé, a rare experience in this otherwise foggy region.
