Roça Porto Real (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Porto Real, on the island of Príncipe, is a significant historical complex that reflects the archipelago's agricultural past. Founded in the late 19th century, it was one of the most important plantations on Príncipe, specializing initially in coffee and later in cocoa. The complex is an excellent example of the typical structure of a Roça, with a central courtyard around which the administrative buildings, the main house, workers' quarters, and crop drying facilities are grouped. The history of the Roça is closely linked to the arrival of contract laborers, whose workforce formed the basis of the plantation owners' wealth. After independence and subsequent nationalization, Porto Real shared the fate of many other Roças and gradually fell into decay. Today, the partially restored buildings form a fascinating open-air museum, offering insights into colonial society, the plantation economy, and the complex relationships between Europe and Africa.
