Belo Monte (Coast) refers to the immediate steep coastal zone below the famous viewpoint roça Belo Monte in northeastern Príncipe Island. Here the Atlantic has carved some of the most spectacular natural lava arches and caves in the entire archipelago: wave vaults, blowholes and hidden reef caves accessible only by boat or kayak. The cliffs are a significant nesting site for rare seabirds, including the masked booby and the band-rumped storm petrel, whose populations are monitored by the Príncipe „Fundação Príncipe“ conservation programme. A small group of local fishermen has specialized in deep-sea fishing in the treacherous currents off the coast and is considered among the boldest and most experienced on the island. Witnessing sunrise over Banana Beach from the coast, with silver-blue surf and screaming tropicbirds, counts as one of the most striking natural moments in all of West Africa.
