Maria Correia lies on the rugged west coast of Príncipe Island and bears the name of a historical figure who has become almost mythical in the island's oral tradition: Maria Correia, a Creole landowner of the 18th century, is said to have played a key role in plantation management at a time when women were barely visible in economic structures. The present-day hamlet is a small scattered settlement marked by steep volcanic cliffs, narrow gorges and a coastline relentlessly battered by surf. Residents live from deep-sea fishing, small cassava and banana plots and from gathering pacaca crabs in tide pools. The cliffs are an important nesting site for seabirds such as tropicbirds and storm petrels, making Maria Correia a hotspot for ornithological research. Due to its remote location, the village is reachable only via rough tracks or by boat, and that is precisely its charm.
