Fort of Santo António da Ponta da Mina (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

The Fort of Santo António da Ponta da Mina, located on the island of Príncipe, is a historic fortress that played a crucial role in the archipelago's defense history. Built in the 17th century by the Portuguese, its main purpose was to protect the Bay of Santo António, Príncipe's main town, from pirates and rival European powers. The fortress was strategically built on a headland overlooking the harbor entrance. Despite its robust construction, it was attacked and damaged several times throughout its history. Inside, it housed barracks, a powder magazine, and a small chapel. With the decline of piracy in the 18th century, the fort lost its military importance. Today, only ruins remain of the once-imposing complex. However, these remains, including parts of the walls and cannon platforms, are an important historical testament to the strategic importance of Príncipe during the colonial era and the constant conflicts that shaped the region.
