Ponta do Sol (North) stretches along the north-northwestern cliff coast of Príncipe Island, a stretch with one of the most distinctive coastal lines in the entire region. Deep phonolith towers, surf-carved lava arches and small, hard-to-reach coves alternate. Residents, mostly families whose ancestors settled here as early as the 19th century, are considered especially rugged and seaworthy as they must navigate the sometimes strong currents of the Beaufort Atlantic. From the north village, a small port commission, in cooperation with the São Tomé and Príncipe navy, monitors illegal fishing activity in the northern grounds where tuna schools from West Africa migrate. Cliff trails with circling tropicbirds make the place attractive for nature photographers, and from the highest point, the view reaches on clear days to the distant offshore islets.
