Pico do Príncipe (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Pico do Príncipe is the highest point on Príncipe Island, reaching an elevation of 947 meters. It is located in the southern, mountainous part of the island and is a remnant of an ancient volcano that was active millions of years ago. The peak is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on Príncipe Island and hosts some of the best-preserved primary rainforests in West Africa. Due to its isolated location and difficult accessibility, a unique flora and fauna have developed here, including many endemic species. Climbing the summit is a challenging expedition through extremely steep terrain and dense vegetation, where hikers often encounter rare orchids and ferns. Geologically, the mountain consists primarily of basaltic rock, carved into distinctive shapes by heavy erosion. At higher elevations, the mountain is almost constantly shrouded in clouds and mist, which has enabled the formation of a montane cloud forest ecosystem. The protection of Pico do Príncipe is crucial for the conservation of global biodiversity and the survival of rare animal species on the island.
