Best season
The best season to see the endemic Príncipe parrot is during the drier months, typically from June to September. At this time the birds are most vocal and active, frequently moving between fruiting trees.
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best chances to see parrots foraging and calling in the canopy. Avoid midday when they rest in dense foliage and become much harder to spot.
Etiquette
Maintain a respectful distance of at least ten metres from the parrots and never feed them. Avoid loud noises and sudden movements to prevent stressing the birds.
What to bring
Bring a quality binocular with at least 8x magnification to spot parrots high in the canopy. Wear waterproof hiking boots and a lightweight rain jacket, as the reserve can be damp.
Getting there
Access is only via a guided tour that includes a boat ride from the main island of Príncipe and a hike through the biosphere reserve. Advance booking through local operators is essential.
