Esperança (Valley) is the valley extension of the Esperança settlement in southern Príncipe and lies sheltered between gentle slopes that block the constant Atlantic winds. This microclimate makes the valley one of the most productive growing areas for traditional São Toméan root vegetables: yam (inhame), cassava, sweet potatoes, cocoyam and matabala grow here in an impressive varietal diversity that the UN World Food Programme recognized in 2021 as notable for African gene-bank preservation. Residents lead a quiet, almost meditative lifestyle; the valley is also acoustically exceptional, which is why traditional songs, especially the polyphonic dêxa-mantxa songs, resonate here with particularly impressive depth. A small women-led cooperative also markets dried roots and flours in São Tomé and Lisbon, giving the valley growing economic visibility.
